We asked Misti a few questions so that you can get to know her better.
Q: Tell us about you/your business and where you are from?
A: Misti Kauffman of Balloons by Misti in Grand Forks, North Dakota
I have 6 kids and have always done balloons for their birthdays; I had my own helium tank that I leased. We have a storefront in a local mall (not a very busy mall)
Q: Who are your favorite clients?
A: I love doing everyday celebrations….birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers and personal celebrations.
Q: How long have you been in the balloon business?
A: I started from my home in May of 2019 and moved into my store space in the mall in February of 2020. We were set to open just as the world shut down.
My passion for doing more with balloons really started to bloom in October 2008 while we were living in Fairbanks, Alaska. From 2008 until May of 2019 I was finding any reason I could to decorate for balloons. Every school event, gymnastics meet, Cub Scout, church or community event all had balloons at them, because I would pay for them and create some really fun things. I was just researching and learning on my own.
I did not know there were actual classes or events you could attend to learn balloon techniques. Since I have joined Mastermind my mind has been blown at how much easier it becomes when you know how to do things correctly (instead of just trying to figure it out yourself).
Q: What is your top “skill” or “signature” design/service?
A: Personalized Celebration Arrangements (Tabletop and Stands) I just love to create things that are unique and made just for the person receiving them.
Q: What is your favorite balloon color combo, color and brand?
A: I enjoy working with Sempertex and Betallic brand balloons, although my favorite colors lately have been coming through Kalisan, a new brand that we use quite often at our store.
I love the retro deep blue, Retro Blue Glass and Retro Storm are my current favorites. I enjoy working with that brand because of the colors and I also feel they are comparable to Sempertex and Betallic.
Q: What is the biggest lesson learned as a balloon business owner?
A: It’s a whole lot of work. Being a balloon business owner goes far beyond the balloons. In fact there are days that I yearn to touch the balloons, because I am so busy with all the other stuff. Marketing, finance, customer management, inventory, etc.
Q: How did you meet Joette?
A: I believe that I had joined the balloon coach community and she messaged me and then we had a phone consultation so she could learn more about where we were at, which was extremely overwhelming and stressed at how we could survive if we continued to grow at the same pace as we were as we were initially starting out. I joined the Mastermind group and immediately could see the immense value of the program. I began implementing things immediately and it was transforming my business. I KNOW I would NOT have been so successful without being a part of the balloon mastermind group.
Q: When did you first attend or teach at a Balloon coach event what event?
A: My first Balloon Coach event was attending Summit 2021. It was amazing and I had taken my daughter there with me (she is just 16, but is my partner in all of this). We both learned so much valuable information there that we are continually using to improve our business and make things easier for us.
Q: What are you most excited for at Balloon Boss Summit 2022?
A: I am looking forward to being a part of the program. I still can’t believe that I have been asked to present and be a part of it. It’s all a bit surreal to me. I have enjoyed learning from the balloon boss groups and am beyond honored to share some of the things that have helped in our small business. We don’t have a big team and I don’t know if we ever will. I love being a small family business that provides amazing balloons for the people and events in our community.
