Many people get so excited about creating the balloon decor and thrilled that people are willing to pay them for what they are doing, that they don’t take time to look into all the steps of creating the business! This Balloon Professional “Stepped Up Her Game”

During Closing remarks at FLOAT 2015, in St Louis Missouri, Steven Jones the executive Producer of FLOAT stated “Step Up Your Game” Many of the balloon professionals took his message to heart and are meeting and exceeding their goals! Carolyn Truby, CBA posted some exciting news recently so I asked her for an interview to find out what she attributes her current success to. I’m a perfectionist being an accountant and lawyer, so I held back thinking I didnt know enough or wasnt good enough. Once I decided to ignore the doubts I was able to excel. Confidence is the key. I work full time as Director of Finance at Victory Christian Church International in Gaithersburg, Md. I live in Germantown, MD. Business name is Tru-B-loons Event and Party Decor. I have been in business for 4 years.   What made you “step up your game?” It was a combination but more importantly for me it was believing in myself. FLOAT increased my confidence and added to my faith that I am on the right path for me, I just moved forward, as I did opportunities came. I also decided to make it a priority. Even though I still work a full time job, I dedicated time and money for education, maintaining my website, books, and social media. I pushed fear of the unknown out of the way and went for it. I also made great connections and communicated with people to learn and share info. Carolyn made a post on Facebook with photos from an event: I wanted to share that I am still steppin’ up my game. I learned how to trace a logo with my cameo sihlouette. It came out very well and the client was very pleased with their customized column toppers. While I’m grateful for all jobs, I am especially grateful for my last several jobs that have paid more than $1k and some more than $2k. Education is worth it, people. Step out from fear of NO…they might just say YES!!!

Balloon decor by Caity Jones, inspired by Lisa Talip Wow! I am so excited to share this interview with you. Last night while online I saw that Caity Jones Cba, Spiral Spirit Balloon Company based in Washington, DC. had posted a photo of the column she made for McDonald’s inspired by a post on Facebook by Lisa Talip, CBA several weeks ago. The I’m Lovin’ It columns were originally designed and made as a promotion at the Corporate Offices near Lisa in Chicago to promote the upcoming Oct 6th USA launch of All Day Breakfast. bc McD in work area                 Lisa suggested people approach their local stores and go for the sale. I wrote a blog about Lisa’s idea and encouraged everyone to get out and make a sales call. I know several balloon artist around the US who had made flyers, went to their McDonald’s and faced these objections: NO, we are not Interested We don’t allow soliciting we won’t even look at your flyer. We have a Agency that handles all marketing. Not interested. I started thinking, who is going to be the first to get a YES? I was so excited last night to see that someone had success with their sales call and I wanted to know how she got the YES! So I messaged Caity and asked, is that photo a sample or did you get someone to buy it? I actually got 2 franchises!! I got on the highway and stopped at 10 McD’s (half the stack of fliers I had printed). One franchisee called after her employee handed over my flier and card. She owns 5 stores and wanted something in all of them. I think the clincher was the ability to brand- putting her management company’s logo on half the decor. The other one I called the franchise office, asked for marketing, and gave an elevator pitch ending with a, “What’s your email address? I’ll send over the flier.” Their response was more unusual- they weren’t really interested in the all-day decor, but are doing a TV spot with the local news regarding free breakfast for K-8 grade and wanted something festive in the background. That’s what I’m delivering tomorrow- the pic. Incidentally, the marketing manager is planning a party for her granddaughter and wants me for that too! The other franchise could not have cared less about my call and email! I didn’t hear a word. One thing I noticed was that the large (pending, though she’s already talking Christmas) order were all new or remolded stores with attention to landscaping, etc. That seems to be an indicator of the franchisee’s willingness to spend $$ on marketing, deco, etc. HOW exciting is that! Did everyone say YES…NO..but she did get a yes!   I then asked Caity if it would be ok to share her experience in my blog for others to learn from. I loved her response as we think with the same mindset. Please, by all means, share! I live with abundance mentality and rest on the shoulders of giants who have shared their experience and knowledge!
Making sales calls is soooooo far out of my comfort zone. It was a paralyzing fear I had and still struggle with. I think the enormity of McD actually made it less intimidating. So what if nothing happened? I could chalk it up to getting lost in the fray of a giant corporation. I thought $8 on printing nice quality fliers and a tank of gas was a very reasonable investment to take the sales plunge and get over myself. In the week and a half since I made the trip, I’ve printed up two more niche fliers and will get out there with my branded polo and smile. They might say no, but they might say YES! I’m up for the challenge of educating my ideal clients on the value of balloon decor. THANK YOU Caity for sharing your experience. THIS is what is all about. FLOAT Producer Steven Jones has a Love To Link tour hitting several US cities Sept – November. What is special about the LOVE 2 LINK Tour? In my dealings with other industry professionals over the years, it seems like the number one thing people want out of classes is to learn things that will expand their business. Sure, it’s fun to learn a cute technique or trick, but at the end of the day, people want a return on their investment of their time and money invested in the class. The LOVE 2 LINK Tour is all about that return. While I am focusing on creating a lot of new pieces that I’ve never presented before, I am also trying to keep them grounded “in the real world” so to speak. You know, things people can actually use at their events or sell to clients. In addition, it’s really important to me that my colleagues leave the class at the end of the day with both recipes AND skills. Recipes are great, but anyone can follow a recipe. I would like people to leave my class with skills where they can go back home and design their OWN pieces, so they ultimately become less reliant on others. And one last added bonus. Because the tour is about linking balloons, I’m really pleased that both major manufacturers will be featured in the class. Both Qualatex and Betallic have agreed to provide product for my classes, so just like at FLOAT, people will get the chance to see a variety of tools in action so they can decide for themselves which they would prefer to use. Why should people register for FLOAT 2017 now? One of the biggest factors that returning people love about FLOAT is it’s intimate size. The current Qualatex tour seems to be a hit – how do people sign up for the US Tour? The response to the tour has been overwhelming! I love hearing all of the amazing stories from people about how the classes have already helped their businesses. It is thrilling to realize how much we are impacting people in a positive way. The starting point for registering for any of the remaining stops would be to visit From there, people can click on the city closest to them to find a “Register Now” button that takes them to a 3rd party registration site. Yes, you can change your schedule up until the week before the event. Will some classes “sell out” with limited seating in the classrooms? Yes, there is a set capacity for all of the classes. However, most class sizes are larger than previous years. How do people find out if there is a QBN chapter in their area? Balloon Business Education: What’s my best next step? Part 1 of 3

Ongoing education has been very beneficial to me in the growth of my balloon business since 2003. No matter if you are brand new or a veteran with 20 plus years in the balloon industry, staying current and learning from others is priceless! I am often asked, “what convention should I go to?” I am now asked, “Is business coaching right for me and my situation?” Over the next 3 blogs, I’m going to share some tips on choosing the right training for you and provide resources for you to locate education opportunities. What I have gained from attending conventions and classes:
  1. Hands on experience building decor pieces to gain the confidence and skill to create new decor for my clients.
  2. Photos of items that I helped create to share with my clients and be able to say with confidence that I can create it for them.
  3. Tips and Hints, even after being in the industry for 12 years, when I sit in a basic class, I learn something from the instructor. Everyone has different techniques they use, phrases they use to sell designs, and unique processes that I can apply to my business.

World Balloon Convention April 6 – 10 2016 has a great savings plan broken down for you on their registration page World Balloon Convention Registration opens on September 15th. Print the schedule out in advance and decide which classes you want to register for as it’s part of the registration process. Some classes do have limited seating. You are allowed to make changes to your classes prior to the convention.

NO EXCUSES!!! If “you don’t have time to go in person” PICK UP THE PHONE!!! Call them! In person is best…but a Phone call is better than not taking action! OCT 6th is the official date – but some stores are doing it now so they may want the balloon ASAP!!! GET your stuff together and GET to your Local McDonalds!!! Worse thing that happens is they say NO — you then ask if they would like decorations for Christmas – or other promotions. You thank them for their time and you you pat yourself on the back for GETTING out and making a sales call! Meet Sue Bowler, Creator of The Very Best Balloon Blog

One of my goals with is to create an Online Community for Balloon Professionals around the world to be able to easily locate training, resources and support to take YOUR Business to New Heights! No matter if you are new to the industry or have been earning money from balloons for over 25 years, one key to continued success is to stay current in the industry. The Very Best Balloon Blog is a resource I enjoy turning to often, with over 200 blog posts, and a search feature that makes it easy to find the topic you are looking for. I had the pleasure of interviewing Sue Bowler, CBA, a social media columnist for Qualatex to find out a little more about the person behind one of my favorite blogs.

                  What did you do before entering the “world” of balloons? I am one of those people who does not change their jobs often. Primarily, you could say that I have always been an instructor! I got my first training instructor job at the age of 19 for a large retail store and pretty much worked for the same company until I left to have my first daughter. How were you introduced to the balloon world? After my first daughter was born, I was looking to find something that I could do that would fit in with being a mother and working from home. I saw an advert for ‘talking balloons’, these were plastic strips that you attached to balloons that made them talk… and that was it, I was hooked, although the plastic strips were pretty useless! How long have you been working as a freelance instructor for Qualatex? On and off for about 18 years! I have always worked closely with Qualatex. I worked for Conwin for 7 years from 2002-2009 and continued to teach at events, but since leaving Conwin, I resumed working for Qualatex as a freelance instructor. What do you feel is the most important aspect to having a successful business? To run a business as a business. That’s where I pretty much failed when I first started. I did not know how to run a business, how to charge for my work, or how to write a contract. The creative side comes naturally to most of us, but the business side is harder, but so so important! What is the craziest situation you have ever encountered while on a balloon installation? Not sure if this is crazy or stupid. I was working on a wedding many years ago when the bride and wedding party arrived early at the venue. Instead of keeping my cool and just clearing up quickly and leaving, I hid in a cupboard. It then dawned on me that it would be ages yet, and I slipped away without them ever knowing that we were still there! What resources does offer for Balloon professionals? My website is work in progress, I sell educational videos including my own, plus I show people what I am capable of making with balloons, which occasionally does attract an enquiry and has lead to some great corporate jobs! I am very excited as I have a new DVD, Balloon Decor 2, that will be on sale from September 1st. There is a lot of additional information that I did not manage to get on the DVD as I over-ran (it’s over 4 hours long)! So, there will be a big resources area on my website for those who have bought the DVD. Do you ship your DVD’s outside of the UK? I ship my video’s worldwide, but I also have some distributors around the world, so I am happy to refer people to a local distributor if possible. Most memorable or special moment for you in the world of balloons. At the 2010 WBC, I was awarded The Golden Light Award in honour of the late Linda Bruce. Linda and I were very close friends, we enjoyed spending time together whenever possible, bearing in mind we lived 1000’s of miles apart! When we lost Linda to cancer, I felt that I had lost a big part of my life. Being awarded this honour was so very special! What professional organizations are you a part of in the UK? I am a member of an organisation called BAPIA – Balloon and Party Industry Alliance. It was actually founded and is owned and run by my husband John Bowler. John has also worked in the balloon industry for almost 25 years and is extremely passionate about the industry. John started BAPIA as it was felt that there was a need for an independent organisation that could support the balloon and party industry. BAPIA’s membership is a healthy mix of manufacturers, distributors, retailers and decorators. It also has members from others industries such as face painters, candy cart suppliers and other party based businesses. BAPIA works hard to support the party industry and the professionals within it by promoting a best practices policy to create positive and sustainable growth. BAPIA promotes its members and the industry to the public and encourages the use of professionals for all balloon and party needs. BAPIA aims to act as a unified voice for balloon and party professionals and will represent its members on industry related matters and bring benefits and information to assist in the growth and security of their business. With a group of members, BAPIA supports one of the biggest children’s charities every year by decorating their Christmas party. This is a very high profile event and gets huge media coverage. The decor helps to transform a hotel ballroom into a magical Christmas wonderland each year! Blog from 2014 Children’s event   What are some of your favorite countries traveled to teaching about balloons? I love the culture in Japan, and traveling to remote places. In Israel, I loved the history of the country, the people and food are lovely. What is the TOPIC or blog post that seems to have the MOST interest – or that you refer people to most often. This is a very interesting question, as so many of the blogs that I have written over the years get read and re-read all the time! The top topic appears to be ‘how to make balloon walls’, which is closely followed by “How much should I charge for that”? I think there is a good split between design lead blogs verses business related blogs. What words of wisdom do you have for those who are struggling in building and growing their business to the level of revenue they dream about, but have not yet obtained? Invest in your future! There is no better way to grow your business than to grow your knowledge and confidence. I think that many people start a balloon business because they feel they don’t have to invest a great deal to get started. But to succeed, you need to treat your business as a business and not a hobby. Invest in good education, good equipment and good marketing. Anything else you would like for people to know about you? Apart that I am very passionate about the balloon industry! I recently became a grandma… or nanny as I am known as. My granddaughter, in only a few short months, has become such a very special part of my life. I also have an adorable dog called Mylo, who keeps me very fit and happy too. Do you work ON your business?

Ok, I know what some of you are thinking. Hello, of course I work ON my business….I’m a business owner and all I do is stay busy for over 16 hours a day working. So what’s the difference between working ON your business instead of IN it? If you are like me, I jumped into owning a balloon business with little business experience, except for 2 years as a direct sales consultant selling party supplies! My first goal was to inflate balloons and get them to all of the clients who had placed orders, that’s working IN the business. Then I found out about working ON my business. I found out that my County Small Business Administration offered free training. So I went! We met in a small conference room with a dozen new business owners who had just received their business licenses. We reviewed making a Business Plan and the importance of having one. I was handed a 3-ring binder full of details on how to create a business plan and was told to search out the local Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations and leaders for support. I found great business organizations to be a part of and connected with mentors to learn from. The #1 thing they would all say is “TREAT YOUR BUSINESS like a BUSINESS!

  2. Have a marketing strategy.
  3. Look like a professional.
  4. Branding is important.
  5. Have a great online presence.
  6. Hire staff to increase your sales and have time to work ON your business!
I participated in a Mastermind group through National Association Of Women Business Owners. The six of us met twice a month to share our ups and downs and provide insight through experiences to help each business grow and succeed.
