Balloon Business Owner: Strive for Progress not Perfection

Balloon Business Owner: Strive for Progress not Perfection

What is the first thing that came to mind when you read those words? Did you think, “I am always going for perfection.” Or did you think, “I take action and don’t worry if things are not perfect.” As the owner of a business it is really easy to get in a rut, and not produce new options for our clients, or try new marketing as we wait to be perfect. Perfection is often used as an excuse, masking our fear of reaching out to a new market or creating a new service. Today as I write this blog it is May 2, 2020.   I realize that this message is more important for me to share than ever. March 13th was my last day of working at the Party People Events shop as the retail manager before working from home during stay safe at home due to Covid-19.  Our company is back to doing non-contact deliveries in Central Florida, but we are unsure when the retail shop will reopen. Over these weeks I have been hosting online meetings with my Balloon Boss Mastermind Members and open forums with other balloon professionals to make plans to not just survive but Thrive!  I have been interacting with balloon business owners that have never stopped working from the start of this pandemic.  They are in cities that allowed them to keep working and bringing joy to our clients during this scary time. I have also worked with many balloon pros who are now having to juggle a full time job, their balloon business and serving as the homeschool teacher for their kids will dealing with their spouse also working from home. In crazy times like these, it is easier than ever to make an excuse not to move forward if we let our brains make us think we have to do things perfectly to move forward. As I have been doing extra one to one sessions, I realize that so many need to hear this message. There is a NEW NORMAL. During what often is the busiest time of the year for large scale events, our industry (for those who are able to work due to City and State guidelines) have now pivoted to providing outdoor yard decor or non-contact delivery bouquet and gifts. Are you a person that is stuck on STOP or PAUSE mode because you are afraid to move forward as you are waiting to have the “perfect system”, “perfect product”, “perfect pricing”, “perfect marketing”? Example One of your balloon business goals – Write One Social Media Post a Day on Facebook to share the new services you are offering. Perfection Blocks:
  • I’m not a good writer
  • I don’t have a great photo of my non contact deliveries
  • I don’t think the balloon design is good enough to post
  • No one is going to read it anyway
  • I’m not creative
  • I don’t have many followers on social media
  • …and the list goes on and on

When you take action steps forward in your business you are opening up the possibilities for growth.
  • Posting a photo on social media with a call to action to call our office, or fill out the contact form now has a chance to catch a perspective customer’s eye rather than not creating a post
  • Setting a pricing guide with the top 4 items you want to offer and prices allows for you to quote efficiently and make money
  • Create a balloon design you want to sell and take photo of it and share it online
  • Post on your balloon business facebook page or instagram account
I encourage you over the next week to look at the things that you may have been putting off completing or going after while you wait for perfection. Confidence grows by taking action, and learning from the experience. I’d like to share a bit of a personal journey with you on this concept and why it really spoke to me as a subject to share with you. It is easy to get caught in the trap of not doing something…waiting on perfection. I am so thankful that back in 2014 a dear friend, Pat Crossland asked me an important question of WHEN. She knew my dreams of starting a training program with an online platform to share the resources I wish were available back in 2003 when I started my full time journey in balloons. I had doubts and concerns about if what I was building would be perfect to fit the needs of others. Pat encouraged me to set a deadline and go for it. Balloon Coach was started in January of 2015! It took time to build out my online platform, we launched my first webinar program in September of 2015 with David Mahoney of Balloons Everyday as our first speaker.

Is FEAR Standing in the Way of Your Success?

Is FEAR standing in the way of your success?

As a Balloon Business Owner it’s good to take a look at the obstacles that stand in your way.

What is your FEAR? As you wake up today and look at your plans for the future, in reaching for your dreams, what scares you? It is OK to have fear, we all have something in our life that tends to creep up or jump out at us and keep us from becoming all that we can be. Common fears that keep us from our full potential include, FEAR of:
  • Failure
  • Speaking in public
  • Opening ourselves up to others
  • Being criticized
  • Heights
  • Snakes
  • Making a fool out of ourselves
  • Success
  • People saying no to our products (and taking that personally)

I am a bit of an expert on facing fear. Something you may not know about me is prior to my full time career in the balloon industry (since 2003), my college degree was Recreation & Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Outdoor Education. My internship (where I met my husband, Brian) was at Bradford Woods, run by the University of Indiana. Each week, we had students and corporate groups that came to the camp for Team Building and Challenge course experiences. My job as a high ropes facilitator was to tie the harness onto climbers correctly so they would not fall to their death from 100 foot platform up in the air.   I would then have the climbers on belay (a rope tied from their harness, and attached to me to guide them as they were in the air to keep them safe while facing their fears through the high ropes challenge course). Talk about an exciting job!  Each day, I helped people face their fears and celebrate with them as they accomplished the journey! Brian and I always wanted our daughter Marlee to have that same awesome feeling of being up in the tree tops and facing her fears. In 2013, our family took a trip to West Virginia to an adventure camp. First step is training:
  • What can I expect from the experience
  • What do I need to be successful and have the right equipment
  • Ask questions as needed
Next step is practice. They run a line just off the ground to learn what it will feel like up in the cable sitting in your harness. And the last step? Jump. Just go for it!               Why did I share this story with you? My hope is to inspire you to move forward…one step at a time. In 2003, I stepped out in fear and went from working full time in social work to owning a balloon decor company as my primary source of income.  This was truly a leap of faith, as I do not have a business degree and was not totally aware of all the hats I would wear as a business owner. I knew I loved balloons and creating memorable celebrations.  The rest I learned as I moved forward daily to grow a thriving business. I prepared myself for business growth by attending balloon and business training. I then applied what I learned and jumped out into networking into my local area. Sometimes I rocked it; sometimes not so much.  The key is I did not give up and look at each day as a new learning opportunity.  Over time I became known as the go to place for creative balloon decor in my area as I grew my business. In 2015 I  launched BalloonCoach.com to create resources for you that I wish were available to the balloon industry back in 2003. If you feel overwhelmed as you grow your business and would like support and training as you  face your fears head, on here are some links to help you on your journey to build a thriving balloon business. Join us in Orlando Promotions & Profits Retreat Orlando 2018 Click the link above to see the details of our 9 person teaching team, schedule and guest hotel, Disney Springs Holiday Inn Orlando.   As you review different websites and trainings and select the right fit for you. The next step is preparing for the training. Picking your Class Schedule at a Live event with class options
  • If 2 or more people from the same company are attending the convention, it is best to divide and conquer. Learn as much as you can. You may take 1 or 2 key classes together, but splitting up gets you the most information.
  • Write down what you are wanting from your training before selecting your classes: What is your current top pain point or difficulty in your business? What is a technique you would like to learn? Who have you always wanted to learn from? What are your top $$ customers requesting that you do not feel confident providing?
  • Print the schedule
  • Put a Star next to the class that solves a pain point – problem for you
  • Put a smile face next to the people you want to learn from
  • Pick one class that you want to take JUST FOR FUN and put an ! by it
  • Put a $ next to the business classes
  • You can use more than one symbol per class.
  • If a class has more than one of you labels it’s probably a class you should go to
  • Then take the rest and see how they fit in the schedule and think – How will I make my investment back if I take this class?
After you choose an event to attend # 1 Reserve your hotel room #2 Set up to have a room-mate if you need someone to share expenses with Things to ask potential room mate – I have heard many horror stories from conventions past when people room with people they have never met. I know people who ended up sleeping in the tub or on the floor in someone else’s room to escape some crazy stuff!
  • Sleep habits
  • Smoker or non smoker
  • Likes to turn room into a bar or likes to go to bed early
  • Snore?
  • Light sleeper?
  • Allergies to perfume or foods you love?
  • Shower Morning or night – how much time do they take?
#3 Schedule travel early to get best rates. Check on shuttles, Uber, Lyft, to the airport etc. #4 If driving, note if there is a daily parking fee at the hotel #5 Visit the website for the convention and take time to review the information!
  • Print the Event Schedule
  • Print the Class Descriptions
  • Print the Class Schedule
  • Look and see who the staff are, find out a bit about them
  • Check out the competitions and deadlines to enter
  • Review the classes and make your tentative schedule
#6 Take time to fill out the registration forms and get them back to the producers to make their life a little easier (and save you time on site). Putting on a convention is a HUGE undertaking, help them help you by doing things in a timely manner. #7 Make an email file folder on your computer for ALL emails about the event to go in. Make it a habit to put all the notes there. #8 Make sure you are on the group Facebook page for the event and either turn on the notification or check it often to see new info. #9 Select your classes wisely; take time to really review the information Click on the link below and print this worksheet to help you with your decisions   Show your support to the event you are attending.
  • Post on social media you are attending the event (let your customers know you are continuing your education).
  • Purchase items from those folks at the vendor showcase, or if they sell from a class etc. No, you can’t purchase everything. But realize the reason people are selling items is to help make back the money they invested in the event. I do my best to support distributors that attend conventions and that provide education for the industry (something to think of next time you go to look for who to buy your balloons from)
  • Post thank you messages, and send a note of thanks to the company or people who organize the event you attend.
  • Give your honest feedback on what you liked and what can be improved in the future
  • Putting on a convention is a huge undertaking. Take time to thank the producers, staff, instructors and sponsors.
  • As you post photos in the future of jobs you land, or increased income from classes you take give a shout out to the teachers and event you learned from.
Packing and Prep List for Convention
  • Positive Mental Attitude
  • Smile and a good handshake
  • Check what the size and weight requirements are for your airline
  • Put suit cases out a week in advance so you are not totally rushed at the end.
  • Hotel and plane reservation numbers in my calendar
  • Deleting photos from phone, tablet, and camera or purchasing additional cards to have room for over 1,000 photos!
  • Pack a lot of business cards! You are meeting hundreds of new people it’s great to share cards to network after event
  • Portfolio or marketing materials that you may share during conversation to get ideas from others on improvements you can make
  • Bring a special baggie or ladies even a cosmetic bag to put all the business cards in of the people you meet.
  • Pack your Power Cord for all electronics (WBC 2012 Jani Blocker was nice enough to buy me a universal power cord when I left my laptop cord at home – not cheap!)
  • Pack an extension cord they come in handy in your hotel room since we all have so many electronics! Make sure it is 3 prong, 3 plug end or power strip
  • If you have a back up power pack or battery for your phone – bring it!
  • Chap Stick
  • Hand lotion
  • Jacket or sweater
  • Logo Clothing to show off your brand
  • Backpack or day bag to keep your notebook, notes etc in from class to class
  • Clothing for the Awards Dinner, and anything within theme or fun for other parties and special events.
  • At least 1 Pair of scissors in your checked luggage
  • Hand pump for jams
  • Vitamins or Emergen-C! Typically you get lack of sleep and you are hanging out with about 800 people so keeping healthy is key!
  • Notebook, it’s nice to have extra Pad of paper for notes
  • Pens – easy to lose a pen or run out of ink
  • Highlighter if you like to highlight notes during class
  • Gum/Mints
  • Travel cup or money to buy one to have beverages in class and in your room
  • Travel Kleenex
  • Nail Clippers and file, with all the balloon work you are bound to break a nail!
  • Static spray
  • Swimsuit
  • FILES for the weeks events. If you are running crews while you are away and plan to be in touch with your crew. Email the information to yourself if you wish to review.
  • $$$$ You will want to have some cash and credit cards ready for meals and purchasing items from vendors
  • IF at all possible plan for a full 8 hours of sleep night before your flight. Once you get to convention it is easy to lose track of time and be up in the lobby talking to a new friend til all hours of the night and morning!
TIPS While at Convention
  • Make friends with someone who has a car or split Taxi or Uber cost and run to a store to grab snacks and food for your room to reduce food cost.
  • Volunteer to work on the hands on builds, teacher prep, or competition teams to learn new techniques and make new friends.
  • Be proud to say “Hey, I helped make that and I know with confidence I can recreate for my client”
  • When meeting new people that you do not want to forget take a photo of them with their name tag up by their face, this way when you return home and your memory is mush from meeting hundreds of new people you will easily be able to reference back to who is who!
2014-03-28 21.13.42 2014-03-28 21.13.47   Brenda Eng and Pearlyn Tam from Singapore After meeting at WBC they then came back to the USA for FLOAT 2014, and then WBC 2016, I enjoy spending time with people from around the world that share my passion for the Balloon Industry! Lots of fun memories are about to be created!           Eat meals with different people. It’s great to see old friends, but make some new ones too! IF you are not an outgoing person, and have a hard time meeting new people, relax and say hello! Networking is one of the main reasons I attend conventions. YES I want to learn from the classes. But the friendships I have made over the years from conventions have been my support system to grow my company and lead to many wonderful travels. *** Remember, lots of business cards!**   Ongoing training and support and monthly webinar programs, BalloonBossPro.com Twist & Shout is the premier convention in the US for Balloon Entertainers. How to Find New Balloon Customers Online

How to Find New Balloon Customers Online

How to Find New Balloon Customers Online

When you look at your sales from the year so far are you happy with where you are at and feel like you have more customers than you can handle? Or do you wish that you had new customers? If you are looking for new customers I encourage you to make the most out of technology to help you find them online. To help you find customers ONLINE – YOUR BUSINESS has to BE ONLINE! How do you choose what is going to work best for you? There are so many social media avenues – Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Snap Chat, Websites and the list goes on and on and on. It’s easy to feel over your head quick!   It is best to start with one thing and do it well then move onto the other. Doing social media well means that you consistently post to the platform that you choose, and interact with your followers.   To help you find balloon customers online, you need to have balloon photos online for them to get hooked and know that YOU are the company they should work with. Through posting people get to Know, Like and Trust You and your company.     Do you have a website? If the answer is no, I encourage you to not just rush out and get one just to have one, put time into the planning and do it well! Since January of 2015 I have been working with Balloon Professionals who have created new websites from scratch to those who are updating their websites, not to mention updating my website several times. Often I hear people say, “my web person just doesn’t GET what I’m wanting from my website”. What I have found is often WE as business owners have not done our homework in advance to get things READY for a designer to do what they need to do, to make the best website for you. Here are some steps prior to developing your website, especially if hiring someone to set it up for you. (these tips also come in handy if you are upgrading or redesigning your website)
  • Business license with a good name for your company that attracts your target audience
  • Purchasing the domain name that fits your business
  • Having good solid photos of your work or a collection of stock images you can use so your clients see what they are purchasing
  • Typing out the content of what you want your website to say
  • Collecting testimonies from your clients
  • Writing the content to put on the site from ‘About Us’ (profile) to names of the decor you post pictures of
  • Creating the detailed questions for your ‘Contact Us’ form to gather as much info from the start as possible when someone reaches out for a quote
  • Determining what galleries you wish to have – are you showing your balloons by type of event, type of decor or both?
  • Do you want your website to have a blog?
  • Have you studied other websites to see what you LIKE and what you do not like?
  • Have you individually labeled each of your photos and put them into albums to make it easy for your designer to put them onto the website?
  • Do you have your photos on Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar to make it easy for the designer to access the photos to load onto your website?
Gather this information together so that when you talk to your designer they have a clear picture of what they are to create. They cannot read our minds! Is Your Balloon Business Booming or Are You Having a Rocky Start to 2018?

Is your balloon business booming or are you having a rocky start to 2018?

How is 2018 going for you? I know many that have had a rocky start to 2018 and others whose businesses are booming!
We all have life circumstances that can cause us to take time away from our businesses. Personally, I just spent 10 days away from my home, husband, daughter and business to stay at my dads home and care for him as he lost his battle with cancer. During the quiet times sitting by his bedside I kept reflecting on how my dad was a master at achieving his goals. He dreamed of something, and then he worked REALLY hard to make those goals a reality. Even while Battling cancer, his body losing weight and him becoming weak, he set goals and worked hard to make his goals happen. So what does this have to do with You and Your Balloon Business? Are you willing to put in the hard work? Invest in new tools? Work daily on the little things that can make a big difference over time? Building a successful balloon business that produces your dream income does not happen overnight, it takes investment of money and time and dedication on your part. The key is to start each new day making steps forward towards your goal.
What sets apart the businesses that are booming from those with a rocky start? Activity! Do not just sit behind a computer screen watching what other balloon people are doing on Facebook! Get out and create balloon decor, take photos of your work, use it on social media, and get the balloons into the hands and EYES of your target market. Build Relationships with people in your target market, visit different networking organizations and pick one to be an active member of. Educate your clients about what you can do and how you can help or serve them with your balloon decor. Make sales calls, in person or on the phone reach out to your potential clients. If they don’t know you exist they cannot buy from you! It is February, do your existing clients know that you LOVE THEM…and want to work with them again? Do your potential clients even know you exist and you are available to decorate when they celebrate? If you are ready to make 2018 GREAT and want to increase your confidence, have systems and organization to your marketing and not just PRAY people will find you. Create content that gets people’s attention and directs your customers to take action. Show your clients they are appreciated and then join us for the next part of our Promotions & Profits Online Workshop.

Face Your Fears and Take Action

Face Your Fears and Take Action!

What is your FEAR? As you wake up today and look at your plans for the future, in reaching for your dreams, what scares you? It is OK to have fear, we all have something in our life that tends to creep up or jump out at us and keep us from becoming all that we can be. Common Fears that keep us from our full potential include:
  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of speaking in public
  • Fear of opening ourselves up to others
  • Fear of being criticized
  • Fear of heights
  • Fear of snakes
  • Making a fool out of ourselves
  • Fear of Success
I am a bit of an Expert on Facing Fear. Something you may not know about me is prior to my full time career in the balloon industry, my college degree was Recreation & Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Outdoor Education. My internship (where I met my husband, Brian) was at Bradford Woods, ran by the University of Indiana. Each week we had students and corporate groups that came to the camp for Team Building and Challenge course experiences.
  • What do I need to be successful, have the right equipment
  • Ask questions as needed
Next step is practice. They run a line just off the ground to learn what it will feel like up in the cable sitting in your harness. And the last step? Jump – Go for it!               Why do I tell you this story? Because BalloonCoach.com is here for you with the resources you need to support you as you face your fears to grow your business. I bought Party People back in 2003, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I knew it was what I wanted to do. BalloonCoach.com was created to give YOU the resources I wish I would have had at my fingertips when I started in the events industry. My Balloon Business is not as busy as I like What can I do?

When I started my balloon business in 2003, I was excited to “be my own boss”. But other than that was not really sure what I had gotten myself into. At that time there was Balloon hq to see other peoples photos and read some articles about balloons but no Facebook, no YOU Tube videos etc. Lately I have heard many people on forums say: I’m Home based and don’t know what to do to get business I don’t have money to pay for training I have a store and not as busy as I want to be I’m not sure what to do next Can I really make a living from Balloons? HERE is the bottom line….INVEST YOU MUST INVEST in your business. My friends who own Two Men and a Truck, Chick Fil A etc. they had to INVEST big bucks to start their companies running. But they knew the investment would pay off in the long run with a lot of Time, Money and Hard work! My college Degree is in Recreation and Leisure studies….after college I taught Team and confidence building at an Outdoor Education facility working with teens and Corporate groups. This Photo is of my Daughter on a climbing wall a couple years ago. I have picked this image as many People have a fear of Heights…or see a wall like this and think WHAT PATH DO I TAKE, WHAT HAPPENS IF I FALL? Following are some tips to help you Choose your Route in your Business. Your Safety line is your training – it can be BalloonCoach.com, conventions or other training available in our industry. Face your FEARS, Make a Plan…and CLIMB!   path to the top INVEST WHAT?? I don’t have any money… Neither did I! At first I invested my Time.
  • I read every article I could get my hands on.
  • I went to the Local Chamber, the Small Business Administration.
  • Now days there is SCORE.
  • FIND resources in your town for Small business owners.
  • Go to every training and network event you can.
  • Join a business association to network with business owners in your town. People buy from people they Know, Like and Trust.
  • To Create income….THIS BUSINESS IS NOT ABOUT being the Best and most Talented Balloon Artist in the World! The people I know who make the MOST PROFIT In our industry make Classic decor in HIGH VOLUME for a Good price to make their $$$!
  • Yes you can make lovely pieces and create income IF you charge for your Time At a high rate and value your training and skill Check out this blog and free mini webinar
CREATE WAYS to pay for Education
  • I put my first classes and travel expenses on credit cards and then paid it off with the money I earned from what I learned in class. I called, networked and worked hard to increase my client base!
  • Work a flexible job for extra money! One year early on I worked part time at Toy’s R Us during Christmas holidays to make money for Christmas presents for my daughter, and help pay the bills over the holidays when I did not have enough seasonal clients.
  • Increase the pricing of your decor and put money right in the bank for education fund
  • Invest $25 a month on auto pay for Balloon Boss Pro class! This is a statement from one of our Members Bobbie McAvoy, Amazing Balloon Decor, Ware, Massachusetts that she posted on a Facebook Forum with a post about Jill Shortreeds Class for Dec 15, 2015 You guys can’t afford to miss these webinars. I first took one of Jill‘s classes at FLOAT, then Qualatex did a seminar with her near Boston and I made the 2 hour drive to take that class. I would have driven 8 hours to learn more from her. This time I only have to go as far as my computer, can’t wait to see what she shares this week. Oh and I heard prizes will be given out. I don’t want to be greedy but you can’t win if you don’t sign up…… I have signed up in the past for David Mahoney’s, Tommy & Scott’s class and last months Chris Potts. Money well spent on my balloon education and I won a FREE balloon drop last month. Value was way more than the webinar cost!!!! Any questions? PM me and I can hopefully answer them, but don’t ask me what I learned because I paid for these webinars and it is the one thing I will NOT share. You want to know what you missed, sign up for the class, busy that night, that’s easy pay for the webinar and watch it at your convience.
  • Invest in an upcoming Local or International Convention some are listed here Upcoming events
  • ASK your friends and family for the GIFT of your education for the Holidays, Birthday etc.
My business did not Grow overnight. I had many LEAN months not knowing if I would be able to pay the electric bill. My husband is a teacher in Florida…Middle of the state not a High pay area. SO with my balloon business making “extra money” was not my goal. I had Quit my full time job, we had a 3 year old daughter and I had to generate income to pay our family bills.   I HAD MOTIVATION to make money as it was make this work or go back to working in “the corporate world” that I did not enjoy. I had been in social work and was feed up with the Paper work and Red tape that would not allow me to get the services to my clients that they needed. Then I worked as a Salesman for Geico insurance in a Large Call Center — I was asked to go into the Management Program due to my background as a manager in my past jobs. I amazed the people in the room when I said, no thank you, my goal is to run my own Decor business and have GEICO Hire me to decorate for them (that Dream did come true about 10 years into my business) I WORK over 8 hours a day, typical is 12 – 15 With Events, quotes, client follow up, Online promotions. Sometimes not sleeping for 2 days during busy season. Being a Balloon Decor Business owner is not all glam…you either work long hours yourself or you pay other people to work with you based on your income goals. Now if you only need an extra $500 a month then your hours will not be that much. But if you are trying to replace a full time income with balloons YOU WILL WORK more hours than you did in an 8- 5 job! Just being honest with you.   BalloonCoach.com was founded for YOU…to be a Catalyst for our Industry to provide Online training to help fill in the Gaps between local and international hands on training. To let you hear from others who are Creating and have Created INCOME from their Balloon Businesses. We have an exciting line up of instructors and topics for 2016 I’m so excited!!!! BEING your own boss and a full time Business owner is NOT for everyone. IF you have a Full time Career that makes great money – good Benefits and you love Balloons – there is NOTHING WRONG in working Balloons on a Part Time bases as EXTRA income working on evenings and weekends. AT THE SAME TIME…you still need TRAINING and need to CHARGE just like if you were working your Business as a Full time income. WHY??? to help grow our industry. IF YOU sell yourself Short…and only charge $5 or $10 an hour for your work in balloons “because you love it” and don’t need the money. THEN HOW are customers going to take Full time Balloon Professionals Serious when they have to charge more to cover their Insurance, Staff and overhead of Vehicles etc? And why shouldn’t you charge well for your wonderful designs??   NOT SURE If you are a Hobby or a Business yet with balloons, or not sure what steps you need to take to be a full business – check this out.   WHAT will your Business look like in 2016??
