How do YOU define Business Success?

How do YOU define Business Success?

Grab a piece of paper or the notes app on your phone and jot down your definition of Business Success.
  • Is it a specific amount of money that your company earns?
  • Is it the amount of money you are able to pay yourself from your business?
  • Is it gaining a target client you have always wanted to work with?
  • Is it working a____hour work week to spend the rest of your time enjoying life?
  • Is it earning enough money to purchase a certain house, car or vacation?
  • Is business success not about the money, but about enjoying the type of work that you do?
Here is the deal…it’s not a cookie cutter answer for everyone, each of us are built differently. We have different skills, values, hopes and dreams. The KEY to achieving success in business is:
  • Writing down those dreams, aspirations, goals, and intentions of what ever you wish to accomplish.
  • Then believe in yourself that you can reach them.
  • Put a plan in place.
  • Share your dreams with an accountability partner.
  • Take action.
  • Daily – go bravely into your success.
From the successes I have experienced I have found that they have come when I focus positive energy on the things that I want. Put a plan on paper – nothing fancy but written down – some steps to get where I want to go. Lean in and LEARN from others successes and failures and apply that knowledge to my life. NOT LISTEN to the negative people in my life that say: “You can’t do that. No one will pay that much money for balloons.” Anyone ever tell you that? I’ve heard it many times. I choose to not believe them and focus on the clients who find value in my services. Let me go a bit deeper in the subject of Positive Mindset. Through my experiences I have found that we can CHOOSE how we are going to react to the situations in our life. Some people choose to believe the negative things that people say about them and make it their own reality. Other’s choose to ignore others and create their own path. When I was in High School I was told, “You are beautiful…but because you are fat you will never get married.” Boy did I prove those folks wrong…I have been married for 23 years to a man who supports my dreams and is there for me in the good times and bad. Had I listened to those people, I would of thought I was unworthy of love and not believed my husband when he said he loved me and wanted to marry me. What does this have to do with business success you may ask? When you go into business many times the people we think will support us and be our cheerleaders are not cheerleaders at all. But instead many family and friends will point out obstacles, state they just don’t understand how you think you are going to make money from “just balloons.” You then have to decide is that going to be your story? Or are you going to create a story of success and prove them wrong? Back in 2003 when I decided to run a balloon business as my full time career, it was a big change for me from being a social worker. However my background from my jobs in Social Work, Sales, and Adventure Based Counseling all came together and helped me form a foundation of a business owner who wished to help my clients create memorable celebrations, a work ethic to work long hours, a desire to learn from others in business, and the endurance to hike through the peaks and valleys of business ownership. As we come into 2018, I encourage you to make time to sit and write your vision for 2018. I feel it in my bones that this is going to be a truly amazing year of growth for the Balloon Industry worldwide. Relationships are Key to business Success!

Relationships are Key to Business Success!   If you prefer to hear this information as an audio blog here is a recording..If not page down and read on.   I purchased my balloon business in 2003. I didn’t know much about running a business, but I knew a lot about making friends and building relationships. I have a background in adventure based counseling, and I worked as a social worker for several years. I did not know when purchasing my balloon business that my social skills would be one of my KEYS to success. Yes, relationships are the key to business success! It’s not about having a business degree or how many letters are behind your name. I know in the balloon world people often ask if you are a CBA, (Certified Balloon Artist) or not. Yes that training is valuable and full of great tools. However if you have a CBA, and do not go out and build relationships with other event vendors, other business leaders in your community and with potential customers you are not going to grow as quickly as you like. You also build relationships via your social media and online interactions. My question for you today is… are you willing to find out about and apply 9 Habits of People Who Build Extraordinary Relationships? Following is an article I read in Inc. It is by Jeff Haden, Published Apr 3, 2013 and I feel the information he put together is very straight forward and things that you can easily give yourself as homework to apply to the relationships you are growing in your business. http://www.inc.com/jeff-haden/9-habits-of-people-who-build-extraordinary-relationships.html Each day we have the opportunity to make the world a better place, by showing genuine interest in others and helping them out as we go on our journey together. People can tell when you are really interested in them, versus just having the conversation to get something out of it for yourself. If you show those around you that you care, they will know, If they like and trust you, it will be natural for them to do business with you. Creating Your Road Map to Success!

Success road map

Creating Your Road Map to Success!

When I purchased my balloon business in 2003, I honestly had no idea what I was getting myself into. I enjoyed planning parties for friends and my church, and knew I wanted to make it my living. No business degree, no formal training in running a business, but I had a passion to create a strong Event Decor company. Working on my own to build my company, I felt lonely and unsure what to do. I reached out to the resources around me within the balloon industry and in the business community I live in, Lakeland, FL (population 97,000). Through Ballooncoach.com I help others in Creating Your Road Map to Success! If you are a person who loves working with balloons and wish to make it your full-time career, part-time income, or want to take your current business to the next level, I’d like to share some tips for your travels on the road to success. When I plan a road trip for my family for summer vacation, the first thing I do is go to Mapquest to find the mileage to where I wish to travel and to find the most direct route. Why? I want to get there quickly and enjoy the destination we are visiting.   #1 Know what your Destination is! I set a GOAL of how much money is needed to earn per year to replace my income as a social worker. My income helps take care of the family expenses, as my husband is a Teacher, and we need two incomes to keep our household running. Some people are unsure of how much income they wish to create from the business or are unclear on the other purposes their business holds for them. Being clear on that from the start is key…If you don’t know where you are going…you are never going to get there!   #2 Ask for Directions! Before GPS, cell phones, etc. my husband and I were driving from our internship in Indiana to his home in Illinois for me to meet his family. We had a good old fashioned paper map, but someone turned off at the wrong highway and things did not look familiar to him…I said lets stop at the next station and asked directions…He said, “no, we are ok”…finally, after an hour of going the wrong way, I got him to pull into a gas station promising I’d go in and ask for the directions. Glad I did as we were going the wrong direction and now had lost two hours we could have spent with his family. Don’t let pride get in your way. It’s OK to ask for directions. (and be prepared to INVEST in your business) In running a business, that means in your area going to the Small Business Administration. Within the balloon industry, attending workshops, classes and conventions to gain the skills needed. YES, you can learn on your own, however, you won’t be taking the most direct route and can easily waste time driving around in circles without creating the income you desire. In business, I’m the same way. I want to GET to my Goal the quickest way possible. So, I look for road maps. I found mentors in our industry who run large volume businesses and found out what works best for them to create the income they desire. At the same time, I found mentors in my area who had successful Floral, DJ, and Event Planning companies and sought them for advice to grow in business.   #3 Fill up your Tank! As you head out on your journey to success, you will need gas in your tank. Fuel Yourself
  • Eat Right
  • Exercise
  • Get Sleep
  • Build a support system of other business owners in your community and in the industry to bounce ideas off of.
  • Subscribe to meaningful blogs, webinars, and podcasts for inspiration.
  • Attend training at least once a year. This does not have to be balloon specific, it can be a business retreat.
#4 Put in the Effort Daily! This is your business, YOU have to put in the effort, make the road map, and then drive to a new stop on the route each day! This may sound funny, but I have met a lot of business owners over the years that want the easy fix and think they can just post a FB page or website and their company will grow independently overnight. That is just not the case. YOU HAVE TO WORK! You have to step out of your comfort zone and do things you may have never done before. My company grew every year because I went out and met new people, learned new things to offer my clients and exceeded my clients expectations. Persistence and hard worked paid off! #5 Positive Mental Attitude The philosophy that having an optimistic disposition in every situation in one’s life attracts positive changes and increases achievement. I am a firm believer in this. I have faced many obstacles over the last 13 years in the industry. I keep a Positive Mental Attitude, a smile on my face, and I keep moving forward! It has worked for me and many others! Smile balloon big           No matter if you are NEW to the industry or are someone who has been in the industry for 30 years, you can always learn from others.
