Leap and Build Your Wings on the Way Down

What does that mean to you?

For me this statement is very true.

In October of 2003, I was serving as a social worker working with adults with developmental delays. I was burnt out on dealing with the paperwork and red tape, and also denials of treatment for my clients. I felt like I was running in circles and getting no where for my clients. In the evenings and weekends I was selling party supplies and doing event decorating through a company called 1-800 Partyshop. It was like being a Mary Kay rep, but with Party supplies!

I went to get a helium tank from a local company for a church function. She had closed her retail shop to work from home. While there I mentioned if you ever need help I’d love to work with you. Two days later she offered me her company that she had owned for 8 years. I did a lot of praying and talking with my husband and I took the leap!

I am so glad that I stepped out from fear and doubt and became my own boss. However, it did not come without struggles. One thing I like to be clear with my coaching clients is that being a balloon business owner (or small business owner of any industry) is not easy. It takes a lot of hard work and sacrifices. One of the reasons I started BalloonCoach.com is when I started my first business I had NO IDEA what resources were available for small business owners, and no idea how to run a business! This was before Facebook and all the amazing online resources that exist today!

If you have a dream, I know you can create your own reality and an exciting future for yourself!

What does it mean to me to build my wings on the way down? It’s about working, searching and educating myself.

This is not just in the balloon world, but seek out local resources

REALITY

If you are NEW to the balloon industry I want to make sure you know that there are a lot of sacrifices that are made to grow a business that can replace a full time income. For many in the events industry, it means working weekends and taking time away from your family.

My daughter was 4 when I bought the business. She learned at a young age how to place helium balloon centerpieces on tables…she couldn’t reach the middle but she could get them to the table for me! I know she has learned a lot from seeing her mom build a business, including if you set your mind to something you can achieve it. She has met amazing people from all over the world attending World Balloon Conventions with me.

However, she also became a Daddy’s Girl as my husband is a teacher – so home by 4 pm everyday and off on weekends. He was her soccer coach when she was in church soccer, he took her to go shopping on the weekends for her school dances and cooked most of the meals while I was out working.

Why am I sharing this? What does this have to do with YOU and your balloon business? When you are a business owner the way you build your business does not just effect you but it effects your spouse, family and friendships. Depending on the business model you choose depends on how much time you have for your “work life balance.”

Balloons are fun and transform a space like nothing else can. It feels magical when you complete the job. However it is WORK! Building a full-time income SOLO takes more time than working a full time job for someone else when you get started! If you do not bring on a TEAM to help you build and grow you will risk burn out!

I encourage you to read the book – or buy it on audio to listen while driving to your events!
