Losing Balloon Jobs to Competition

  Today’s post is shared with permission from David Mahoney, Owner/CEO of Balloons Everyday, Carroliton, TX (near Dallas) Tips #100 for Newbies – I am the biggest loser I have lost 27 jobs this month so far to competition, high prices, small budgets and other things. I am not talking about situations were someone just called for info (oh no, then my numbers would be even bigger). I am talking about 27 people that we got all the info about – when, where, what time, what do they want, how much, etc… I am talking about people that we were only waiting for payment or already got payment and they canceled after the fact.
There are all kinds of reasons, but to be honest, they are the same reasons that most of us already hear everyday… The client found a better price, decided to go another direction, budget cut, zombie apocalypse, etc… LOL!!! There is always a reason, but none of that matters because unless I want to give balloons for free, losing out on jobs in inevitable. The important part is knowing that my pricing is right, I am profitable and that I have the ability to keep looking for more clients that will value my service and will pay me what I need to stay in business. I know I have to fail and lose a lot to be successful. How do I know this, because I have never heard one success story without also hearing about the struggle they went through to be successful. Story after story of how successful people went through unbelievable losses and hardship before becoming successful. Even once they were successful, that didn’t stop the losses or failures. Failure is just part of life, regardless. Ultimately in all those situations, it is what the person of success did after each and every failure… They kept going after their dream, they did not let obstacles stop them and they did not let excuses hold them back. Successful people keep improving after failure. They learn from losing and how to avoid it. They realize it is up to them to overcome. No one makes every shot, hits every ball, lands it perfectly every time. This is another fact proven again and again in stories of great athletes, people of power, success stories. If you want to succeed, you have to get back up and try again, practice more, study harder, overcome, etc… The more we try the closer success will come. The more you do, the more chances you will have to succeed. Embrace the losses and use them to grow and become better. The more losses you have today, the less you will have later on. So go out and be the best loser you can be. I know I am. I wish everyone a Balloon-tastic Week!
  THANK YOU David Mahoney for sharing your insights with the industry, here are a few of my thoughts… One of the challenges I gave out to members of our Passport to Success Program (monthly webinar) is to track their NO’S. I think too many times we FEAR being told no. I have seen time and time again through my coaching clients and Passport to Success members that FEAR often stops people dead in their tracks and keeps them from moving forward and growing. I gave the “no” challenge and stated that the more no’s you get the closer you are to getting a YES! Set your pricing for profit, not just for everyone to say YES. Become OK with No’s, understanding it puts you that much closer to a YES!     I find that many of us in the Balloon Industry are people pleasers. We like to be helpful and make people feel good. When someone says NO to our prices, we often we take it as a personal thing, rather than a business decision. NOT everyone can be our client… if they all said yes our prices would be too low! Fear of failure can paralyze you as an entrepreneur and I see it almost every day. I believe many of us have a FEAR of rejection, and a client saying no turns into a hit in our confidence rather than igniting a fire to rise up. I have seen it paralyze people where they stop taking action, as they can’t handle the thought of hearing NO. I always encourage balloon professionals to have a website to let your clients see your work. Having a blog attached to your website allows a way for you to connect more with your client base and keep your website current. People do business with those they know, like and trust and blogging is a way to share your services, value added content and for people to connect with and get to know you.   One of the top questions I get in business coaching is, what is the secret to gaining more customers? I will list the steps that myself and others that I know have taken to grown their balloon business…and you know what they all include? Hard work! Action taking daily! I have a question for you, and there is no right or wrong answer as we all have our own story and path. My questions are, are balloons: Your stress relief, your fun and enjoyment? Your hobby that makes a little money on the side? Your way out of a job you hate? Your way to have a job you Love? A small business that you work daily creating balloons yourself to earn an income? Or are you and entrepreneur building a legacy company that will stand the test of time and run without you tending to your clients, long after you retire to support you through a dream retirement of relaxation and time with your grandchildren and ones you love?

Confidence and Communication to Grow Your Balloon Business

  When I took the step in 2003 to purchase a balloon business, I don’t think I really had any idea at the time how much confidence, self-esteem and communication would play an important role in the success of my business. I think by now most people have heard the saying “People do business with those they know, like and trust.” However, I don’t know that we always take to into account the need to evaluate where we are with ourselves.  That is, what we need to do to present ourselves confidently to our clients and business networks. I started BalloonCoach.com for a variety of reasons. The #1 reason was to be a catalyst for our industry; to provide resources and training I wish I had had at my finger tips when I became a balloon business owner in 2003. When I bought the company, I immediately went to training on how to make the balloon decor, but what I was missing was HOW to be a business owner. I had self doubts. Some of the thoughts that went through my head as I grew my balloon business:
  • “How am I to run a business? I don’t have a business degree!”
  • “I don’t have the right clothes to wear to a networking lunch”
  • “Who’s going to want to talk to “the balloon lady?”
  • “I’m too fat to fit in at a networking event, no one is going to talk to me”
  • “This client is not going to pay $1,000 for the balloon quote I just came up with”
Have you ever caught yourself with negative self talk? What do you do after that negative thought enters your mind? Do you let it control your decisions and actions? I think we all have at one time or another let negative self talk stop us from moving forward. As a business coach, people ask me – “Joette how did you grow your company?”  or “How do you handle price objections without taking it personally?” Bottom line is I grew my confidence over the years! The more I moved forward and took action (even when experiencing doubts and fear), the more I learned from each step of the way my confidence grew. And so did my income and gross sales! I’ll be honest I have been a leader since childhood. I was the kid that would volunteer to be in charge of things in Girl Scouts and at school. I enjoy meeting new people. This does not mean that I did these things without fear. There was often times of self doubt, however I took action anyway! Would you like to increase your confidence in business situations? Is your balloon business booming or are you having a rocky start to 2018?

How is 2018 going for you? I know many that have had a rocky start to 2018 and others whose businesses are booming!
We all have life circumstances that can cause us to take time away from our businesses. Personally, I just spent 10 days away from my home, husband, daughter and business to stay at my dads home and care for him as he lost his battle with cancer. During the quiet times sitting by his bedside I kept reflecting on how my dad was a master at achieving his goals. He dreamed of something, and then he worked REALLY hard to make those goals a reality. Even while Battling cancer, his body losing weight and him becoming weak, he set goals and worked hard to make his goals happen. So what does this have to do with You and Your Balloon Business? Are you willing to put in the hard work? Invest in new tools? Work daily on the little things that can make a big difference over time? Building a successful balloon business that produces your dream income does not happen overnight, it takes investment of money and time and dedication on your part. The key is to start each new day making steps forward towards your goal.
  What sets apart the businesses that are booming from those with a rocky start? Activity! Do not just sit behind a computer screen watching what other balloon people are doing on Facebook! Get out and create balloon decor, take photos of your work, use it on social media, and get the balloons into the hands and EYES of your target market. Build Relationships with people in your target market, visit different networking organizations and pick one to be an active member of. Educate your clients about what you can do and how you can help or serve them with your balloon decor. Make sales calls, in person or on the phone reach out to your potential clients. If they don’t know you exist they cannot buy from you! It is February, do your existing clients know that you LOVE THEM…and want to work with them again? Do your potential clients even know you exist and you are available to decorate when they celebrate? If you are ready to make 2018 GREAT and want to increase your confidence, have systems and organization to your marketing and not just PRAY people will find you. Create content that gets people’s attention and directs your customers to take action. How do YOU define Business Success?

  Grab a piece of paper or the notes app on your phone and jot down your definition of Business Success.
  • Is it a specific amount of money that your company earns?
  • Is it the amount of money you are able to pay yourself from your business?
  • Is it gaining a target client you have always wanted to work with?
  • Is it working a____hour work week to spend the rest of your time enjoying life?
  • Is it earning enough money to purchase a certain house, car or vacation?
  • Is business success not about the money, but about enjoying the type of work that you do?
Here is the deal…it’s not a cookie cutter answer for everyone, each of us are built differently. We have different skills, values, hopes and dreams. The KEY to achieving success in business is:
  • Writing down those dreams, aspirations, goals, and intentions of what ever you wish to accomplish.
  • Then believe in yourself that you can reach them.
  • Put a plan in place.
  • Share your dreams with an accountability partner.
  • Take action.
  • Daily – go bravely into your success.
  From the successes I have experienced I have found that they have come when I focus positive energy on the things that I want. Put a plan on paper – nothing fancy but written down – some steps to get where I want to go. Lean in and LEARN from others successes and failures and apply that knowledge to my life. NOT LISTEN to the negative people in my life that say: “You can’t do that. No one will pay that much money for balloons.” Anyone ever tell you that? I’ve heard it many times. I choose to not believe them and focus on the clients who find value in my services. Let me go a bit deeper in the subject of Positive Mindset. Through my experiences I have found that we can CHOOSE how we are going to react to the situations in our life. Some people choose to believe the negative things that people say about them and make it their own reality. Other’s choose to ignore others and create their own path. When I was in High School I was told, “You are beautiful…but because you are fat you will never get married.” Boy did I prove those folks wrong…I have been married for 23 years to a man who supports my dreams and is there for me in the good times and bad. Had I listened to those people, I would of thought I was unworthy of love and not believed my husband when he said he loved me and wanted to marry me. What does this have to do with business success you may ask? When you go into business many times the people we think will support us and be our cheerleaders are not cheerleaders at all. But instead many family and friends will point out obstacles, state they just don’t understand how you think you are going to make money from “just balloons.” You then have to decide is that going to be your story? Or are you going to create a story of success and prove them wrong? Back in 2003 when I decided to run a balloon business as my full time career, it was a big change for me from being a social worker. However my background from my jobs in Social Work, Sales, and Adventure Based Counseling all came together and helped me form a foundation of a business owner who wished to help my clients create memorable celebrations, a work ethic to work long hours, a desire to learn from others in business, and the endurance to hike through the peaks and valleys of business ownership. As we come into 2018, I encourage you to make time to sit and write your vision for 2018. I feel it in my bones that this is going to be a truly amazing year of growth for the Balloon Industry worldwide. I know many companies who have seen 10 percent, 20 percent, 50 percent and more growth in the last year. The power of social media has clients coming to us wanting our decor. I joined a master mind group in my area – meet several times a month with business owners in my city – all having a different business, but shared many of the same struggles. I learned from them and found out what helped them grow their business right here in Lakeland Florida and I followed their lead.   DID I meet all 12 of the things on the list above – I’ll be honest I did not! NOT going for Perfection here…I’m Striving for Success! I took a business from one level and cranked it up several levels, and then found someone to BUY my Decor Business so that I can focus on Helping our Industry Reach new Heights.   I now get to enjoy serving as the Marketing Director for Party People Events, Trainer and As Needed Crew Leader on a Part time basis…so that I can focus my FULL ATTENTION on Growing the Balloon Industry to the next level, by serving as a Catalyst to provide Business tools, training and support! (BalloonCoach.com was but a wish and a dream 5 years ago)   TAKE ACTION NOW!
