Steps to Transition From Hobby to Balloon Business

Steps to Transition From Hobby to Balloon Business

Welcome to the wonderful world of balloons! One of the top questions I hear from those new to the industry as Balloon Coach is “how do I become a real business?” If you want to create income or already are getting paid for your services, take time RIGHT NOW and click the link below to read these important tips from the SBA! Small Business Administration is a great resource! Many people get so excited about creating the balloon decor and thrilled that people are willing to pay them for what they are doing, that they don’t take time to look into all the steps of creating the business! Many times local chapters of the SBA hold seminars and training to help you get started and connect you with local resources. Another great resource for local business mentors to get an understanding of the expectation of a business owner in your city and state is Score.org If you know what you would like your business name to be, I encourage you to go to Godaddy.com or another resource to search and see if the name you want to use is available as a .com. If you do .biz, .org etc then someone else already has your name as a .com and people may end up on their website rather than yours. Before you BUY the name, go to register your DBA and see if the name you want is already taken by someone else. More information on how to register is in the SBA link above! Other steps to take as you become a balloon business: *Business license *Resale License to buy balloons wholesale *Collect Sales tax and remit to the state monthly or quarterly depending on your sales and state laws *Liability Insurance *Possible Commercial insurance for your vehicle *Inflation Equipment *Purchase balloons and products from Balloon Wholesalers.     Check out this blog for those resources.   bc coaching works! If this process seems a bit much for you to take in and you would like help creating your business plan, marketing and a place to problem solve with other balloon professionals check out the resources to grow your business visit BalloonCoach.com, click on Mastermind to check our our group coaching program and online training giving you support from a Balloon Professional who has been in the industry full time since 2003. Is FEAR Standing in the Way of Your Success?

Is FEAR standing in the way of your success?

As a Balloon Business Owner it’s good to take a look at the obstacles that stand in your way.

What is your FEAR? As you wake up today and look at your plans for the future, in reaching for your dreams, what scares you? It is OK to have fear, we all have something in our life that tends to creep up or jump out at us and keep us from becoming all that we can be. Common fears that keep us from our full potential include, FEAR of:
  • Failure
  • Speaking in public
  • Opening ourselves up to others
  • Being criticized
  • Heights
  • Snakes
  • Making a fool out of ourselves
  • Success
  • People saying no to our products (and taking that personally)

I am a bit of an expert on facing fear. Something you may not know about me is prior to my full time career in the balloon industry (since 2003), my college degree was Recreation & Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Outdoor Education. My internship (where I met my husband, Brian) was at Bradford Woods, run by the University of Indiana. Each week, we had students and corporate groups that came to the camp for Team Building and Challenge course experiences. My job as a high ropes facilitator was to tie the harness onto climbers correctly so they would not fall to their death from 100 foot platform up in the air.   I would then have the climbers on belay (a rope tied from their harness, and attached to me to guide them as they were in the air to keep them safe while facing their fears through the high ropes challenge course). Talk about an exciting job!  Each day, I helped people face their fears and celebrate with them as they accomplished the journey! Brian and I always wanted our daughter Marlee to have that same awesome feeling of being up in the tree tops and facing her fears. In 2013, our family took a trip to West Virginia to an adventure camp. First step is training:
  • What can I expect from the experience
  • What do I need to be successful and have the right equipment
  • Ask questions as needed
Next step is practice. They run a line just off the ground to learn what it will feel like up in the cable sitting in your harness. And the last step? Jump. Just go for it!               Why did I share this story with you? My hope is to inspire you to move forward…one step at a time. In 2003, I stepped out in fear and went from working full time in social work to owning a balloon decor company as my primary source of income.  This was truly a leap of faith, as I do not have a business degree and was not totally aware of all the hats I would wear as a business owner. I knew I loved balloons and creating memorable celebrations.  The rest I learned as I moved forward daily to grow a thriving business. I prepared myself for business growth by attending balloon and business training. I then applied what I learned and jumped out into networking into my local area. Sometimes I rocked it; sometimes not so much.  The key is I did not give up and look at each day as a new learning opportunity.  Over time I became known as the go to place for creative balloon decor in my area as I grew my business. In 2015 I  launched BalloonCoach.com to create resources for you that I wish were available to the balloon industry back in 2003. If you feel overwhelmed as you grow your business and would like support and training as you  face your fears head, on here are some links to help you on your journey to build a thriving balloon business. Meet Designer of the Year FLOAT 2019 Sara Meyer

Meet Designer of the Year FLOAT 2019 Sara Meyer
I met Sara in 2016 when she attended the BalloonCoach.com first Parade, Promotions & Profits workshop in Chicago, IL. I was so excited for her as I heard her name announced as Designer of the Year at FLOAT 2019. I love it when I see alumni of our programs succeed! I often wonder what motivates a growing balloon business owner to take time to plan and compete at conventions, and thought you might enjoy hearing a bit more about her journey.
How did you get started in Balloon Decor?
I was an art teacher looking for additional work in the summer, so I started working as a face painter. While at a face painting convention in St. Louis two things happened that changed the course of my business: I took a balloon class on a whim and I met Dennis Scott who ended up being one of my best friends. He helped me get started in balloons and once I realized the potential profit in decor I quickly focused my attention in that area. I attended Parade, Promotions & Profits in Chicago organized by BalloonCoach.com, where we made parade decor with Balloons by Tommy. It was the first time I had ever used a sizer, met any balloon people, or considered balloons as a business. I was so proud in that photo. The workshop gave me a new set of skills and the confidence I needed to ramp up my business!
Do you work a full time job outside of balloons?
Yes, I work full time for a college arts department. I’m the events and promotions manager so I get to work around creative people every day and plan and market fun events!
What do you like most about your balloon business?
I love so many things! I like the freedom it gives me; I choose what jobs I take and I dictate my own schedule. It’s also an awesome creative outlet. It’s connected me with so many small business owners and other balloon decorators that have become real friends. I also love the business side of it. I LOVE branding and marketing so that part is really fun for me.
What is a challenge you face as you grow your balloon business?
Right now, I’m right at the tipping point where I could go full time but I would need to find a larger work space, invest in a delivery van, and maybe an employee. Currently I’m a one woman show and because I run such a lean business I have the luxury of being picky with the jobs I take and that keeps it really fun for me. I’ve only been at it for three years so maybe one day I’ll go full time but right now I’m happy juggling both jobs.
You do some nice size decor installs. Do you have someone that assists you on your installs?
90% of the time I’m alone but my husband helps on huge jobs or on New Year’s Eve when we have 20 deliveries and installs in two days. I’ve gotten better at asking the venue or the coordinator for exactly what I need like a lift or extra hands.
What inspired you to compete at FLOAT 2019?
I went to Float 2017 and I was just a beginner, so seeing the other competition pieces was inspiring. I decided then that I would compete at the next FLOAT and I started telling people so I had some accountability. I also had two years to plan so there really wasn’t any excuse. I seem to work well under pressure and with a deadline so I knew it would be a good opportunity to push myself.
How did it feel when your name was announced as Designer of the Year?
The entire night was so fun and exciting! Not only did I place in each area in which I competed but so did many of my friends! It was like being part of a little tribe of competitors and we were all really happy for each other. I’m sure for everyone watching it seemed like a long awards ceremony, but for me it went really fast and all blurs together. I just remember my heart beating and my cheeks getting hot when they called my name. I’m so glad people took pictures because it was seriously one of the coolest nights of my life.
If someone told you they were considering competing at a balloon convention, but were unsure if they should what would you say to them?
Do it! Just jump in and figure out the details later. And design and edit and then redesign and edit. Never go with any of your first ideas, just keep thinking until you find something really unique and weird. Nothing I created was difficult…nothing was twisted or distorted. I just worked really hard to edit my work ahead of time so I had a sound design concept. Except for the foils competition where I made it up the night before! Sometimes you just run out of prep time :)
One question I like to ask companies is how are your balloons sales? Many starting out in the industry like to know what is possible.
Balloon Sales in 2016 I didn’t even keep track! Maybe 10K in sales, I was still face painting a lot this year and just starting with balloons.
Balloon Sales in 2018 75K in sales, working a full time job outside of balloons.
What are some words of wisdom you would share with someone who is struggling in growing their balloon business?
Spend more time learning how to run a business than on balloons. My first year I could only make columns…so I just sold the heck out of columns! You don’t have to be the best artist to be successful.
What do you think the “magic sauce” is that has helped with the growth of your business?
For me it has been connecting with like-minded business owners, usually other young women in the wedding business, and just being myself. Once I stopped trying to be so professional I connected so much better with other vendors and my target clients. Now I actually socialize on social media and it’s been a total game changer. “Likes” and “followers” don’t matter if no one is buying what you’re selling. Also gifting has become a huge part of my business. I send people tiny gifts when we work together and they remember that! I delivered one three-foot balloon and a hand written note to a coordinator I wanted to work with and she has booked me for 4k worth of work this year. The smallest action is better than the largest intention.
I love that Sara shared her journey and tips and hints with us. That is what the Balloon Coach Community is all about – sharing your successes and struggles along the journey so we can learn from each other to grow our businesses.

Build your own 48 foot long balloon arch!

Build your own 48 foot long balloon arch!

One of the # 1 questions I get asked is HOW do I build a sturdy balloon arch for outdoors and what is the biggest I can make it?? For years I have used a method that allows you to build a balloon arch up to 30 feet outdoors. When Gary Ledbetter told me about his design to make a 48 foot balloon arch frame that is sturdy outdoors I was excited! By popular demand of balloon professionals around the world, asking Gary how he constructs the arch and wishing he would come teach in their area or country, he has created a download and will do a LIVE Online class on Tuesday June 13th 9 pm EDT. The Download needs a few finishing touches and will be ready for you to view on June 10th. It is on pre-sale NOW, and locks you in for a spot on the live class online for the 13th. Visit /48-foot-arch-frame/   No travel expenses, enjoy the class from the comfort of your home or office!! The frame design can also be used for smaller arches also. If you are unable to make the live class, you will still have access to the recording of the live class and Q & A session in (WITH download purchase) in your Balloon Coach member area 24 hours after the live class!

Gary taught me how to make his outdoor framed arch, and it has worked out wonderfully!

He is the most helpful guy, and this is a very economical arch, event with the cost of the download instructions. This is much lighter weight than the electrical pvc that I am use to using. You will kick yourself if you skip this download!

As a balloon professional, 5 key things are important for your growth: #1 Investing in your business Question when you get your hair cut how would you feel if you walked into the salon or barber and they had a folding chair for you to sit in? As you sit down they say, I really love cutting hair, but I just don’t have the money for one of those pump up chairs yet. I have to wait to see if this hair cutting thing makes me money first before I buy one of those. I don’t know about you, but I would probably walk out and not have my hair done at that salon. When someone starts a career as a hairdresser or barber they go to school for it, get a license, and purchase the supplies needed to get started. If you are at a point in your business where you don’t want to be a hobby, and wish to be compensated for your work at an income producing level then investing in your business is key with training and equipment. When I was preparing for my webinar with Mark Zettler and we were talking about investing in our businesses he is the one who shared the chair analogy, and it has stuck with me since the day he said it. #2 Education If you want to be a hairdresser or barber, you go to school to learn the trade and get a license or certification. In the balloon industry, there are several programs offered that allow you hands on learning to get a solid foundation. Yes there are tons of YouTube Videos available to learn from and try things on your own. If you plan on balloons being a KEY income producer for you, investing in education online and in person is a way to learn from others who can help you with what works and what doesn’t. This allows you to get on the fast track to success! There is something special about looking a person eye to eye and working side by side with them to learn a technique. Find opportunities to go to in person for education, and make plans to attend. There is nothing more energizing than being in a room of like minded individuals working on a common goal and building relationships with other people in the industry. #3 Practice When you go to cosmetology school you have hours of practice before you get your license. In the balloon industry, order in some balloons and create the designs you wish to sell your clients. This allows you to see that your sizing is correct and that things look good! Photos of your own work help you build a portfolio, and creating the decor increases your confidence level in your skills. #4 Ongoing Training Attending classes, conventions, reading online blogs and articles about the industry and small business keeps you current and motivated to do the best for yourself and your clients. If you wish to have a dynamic growing company, never stop learning! I’m not just talking about focusing on how to make the latest trend in balloons. Take advantage of resources like Score and the Better Business Administrations in your area to learn more about the resources available to small business owners to be able to grow as a business.   # 5 Hard Work! When you choose to build a business it takes a lot of HARD WORK! Very rarely are businesses an overnight success. It takes consistent hard work focusing in on your business to reach your goals! If you would like some help setting up a plan for your business, check out my coaching page for one to one coaching to help you along the journey to success!   Thank you, Gary Ledbetter for giving us the opportunity to learn your technique via your download and online class. It’s exciting to see how the power of the internet is helping our industry grow by leaps and bounds! Your Partner in Success,           Joette Giardina, CBA Mentor. Motivator. Balloon Professional Tips and Etiquette review for 2016!

I get a lot of emails and friend request a few things I have noticed lately. People don’t sign their emails! How do I know who havingaparty123@aol.com is? I don’t! One trick is to go into your email setting and set a signature that automatically goes on all your emails. Signature should include:
  • First and last name
  • title, name of company
  • Website
  • phone number
This way when you email a question to someone or are interacting with a potential client they know who is contacting them – they can go to your website and have a way to call you!   I have had a LOT of request to join Facebook groups and friend request…the first thing I do is click on your page and look on the About Section to see if you are a Balloon Professional if I don’t recognize your name. I don’t know you are a Balloon Professional if you don’t have your information in your About section of your Personal Page! As we wrap up 2015 and start 2016 with a great start – Check your accounts Update information – put new photos up so People know you are a balloon pro! Personal pages should Lead me to your Business page! IF you do not know how to do that – check out our other Blogs on Facebook for Business!   One of the things I love about our industry is the amazing people I have met at conventions and online that have been willing to share their knowledge to help grow the industry. To help our industry Grow here are a few tips when asking information. Facebook Etiquette:
  • If you are friends with a balloon professional DO NOT post a question on their news feed about how to make things or sizing -that is to go in private message or email. (this is there way to communicate with their clients..not the place to ask questions about how to make things) That would be like going onto a Bakery’s Facebook page and asking for them to post their recipe for your favorite cake!
  • Before you Post a question asking how to make something in a balloon group….do some leg work first! Have you searched for information – tried to figure it out on your own? Our society is so full of resources to find things…do a little digging first!
  • Understand that not everyone can respond to all the questions they get. I have enjoyed teaching at conventions, however after a class often get more questions after the class that I’m not able to follow up with while running my business and focusing on my clients and family. That is why I made 3 DVD’s on the details of fabric draping – as I was unable to answer all the people who were asking me how to do each step – now they can purchase the DVD’s and get the step by step they need.
  • When someone takes time to answer your How to question, they are taking time away from doing income producing activity with their clients – understand not everyone is able to stop their business to help you with your questions. That is why investing in Education so you build a support network to brainstorm with is important – so you too can help others out!
  • JUST because it’s on the Internet does not mean it’s TRUE! I often see Incorrect info posted on facebook so be wise and research!

Thank you Treb for creating the Balloon Decor Industry.

steven jones helium at Disneyland While reading Facebook post on Thanksgiving I came across the following post from Steven Jones, Owner-Operator at Balloon Designers, Producer of FLOAT, and owner of BalloonDVDS.com Steven is a master at expressing himself in written word, so I asked his permission to post his post on the BalloonCoach.com blog.   Many times this year while developing the resources for BalloonCoach.com I have thought of Treb and thought, wow this man created the industry that I have been blessed to earn my living by doing something I enjoy! For those who are newer to the industry I think you will enjoy seeing this back story. For all of us in the industry I think it’s important to Thank those who have Paved the road before us. Thank you Steven for sharing your thoughts. Hello there, everyone. While I know it’s not Thanksgiving everywhere else in the world today, I would like to take a moment and reflect on something I am truly thankful for, or should I say someone I was recently lucky enough to visit Disneyland with my balloon bestie,Alexa Rivera, while we were teaching in Southern California. As the night went on, we came across this balloon vendor and for a brief moment I was stood there completely in awe of her. No, it wasn’t because ofanything she did; for that split second, I was reminded that this is exactly where it all began for us in the balloon decor world.
Many years ago, a young Treb Heining was working at Disneyland as a balloon vendor there when he made the world’s first balloon arch. It wasn’t long before Qualatex took notice and the rest as we know it is history. Now, thanks to Treb’s creativity and ingenuity, literally millions of people around the world now know the excitement, the joy and the brilliance that is professional balloon decor. This one man has not only enhanced the lives of countless people across the globe, but he almost single-handedly created an entire industry where thousands and thousands of people around the world are able to thrive as working professionals in a field that impacts so many other people’s lives. At that exact moment, it hit me. This is where it all began….heck, for all I knew I was standing in the exact spot where Treb first thought up the idea of the arch. It was humbling to say the least. While everyone around me was thrilling in the energy and excitement that is the House of the Mouse, I was completely wrapped up in that moment. As I am in the midst of my 20th year in the balloon decorating world, I have never been more thankful as I am today. My businesses are thriving, my team is growing, the future looks strong and I have never been more excited. But even more importantly, for the last decade or more, I have known the joy of self-sufficiency without having to have a “job” or a “boss” in the traditional sense, where I make my own schedule, work when I want and how I want and don’t have to rely on someone else for my livelihood. And it’s thanks in part to Treb. As we Americans celebrate today, please take a moment to thank those in this wonderful field who have come before you. Never forget that each and every one of us is where we are today because of the hard work and sacrifices those before us have made to advance the balloon world to where it is today. So thanks, Treb…..thanks for everything.
Treb – thank you for Creating this wonderful Industry for us to spread joy throughout the world via Balloon Decor! For those who are new to the industry and you have thought of a business name I’d encourage you to go to Godaddy.com or another resource to search and see if the Name you want to use is available as a .com.
