The next step is preparing for the training. Picking your Class Schedule at a Live event with class options
  • If 2 or more people from the same company are attending the convention, it is best to divide and conquer. Learn as much as you can. You may take 1 or 2 key classes together, but splitting up gets you the most information.
  • Write down what you are wanting from your training before selecting your classes: What is your current top pain point or difficulty in your business? What is a technique you would like to learn? Who have you always wanted to learn from? What are your top $$ customers requesting that you do not feel confident providing?
  • Print the schedule
  • Put a Star next to the class that solves a pain point – problem for you
  • Put a smile face next to the people you want to learn from
  • Pick one class that you want to take JUST FOR FUN and put an ! by it
  • Put a $ next to the business classes
  • You can use more than one symbol per class.
  • If a class has more than one of you labels it’s probably a class you should go to
  • Then take the rest and see how they fit in the schedule and think – How will I make my investment back if I take this class?
After you choose an event to attend # 1 Reserve your hotel room #2 Set up to have a room-mate if you need someone to share expenses with Things to ask potential room mate – I have heard many horror stories from conventions past when people room with people they have never met. I know people who ended up sleeping in the tub or on the floor in someone else’s room to escape some crazy stuff!
  • Sleep habits
  • Smoker or non smoker
  • Likes to turn room into a bar or likes to go to bed early
  • Snore?
  • Light sleeper?
  • Allergies to perfume or foods you love?
  • Shower Morning or night – how much time do they take?
#3 Schedule travel early to get best rates. Check on shuttles, Uber, Lyft, to the airport etc. #4 If driving, note if there is a daily parking fee at the hotel #5 Visit the website for the convention and take time to review the information!
  • Print the Event Schedule
  • Print the Class Descriptions
  • Print the Class Schedule
  • Look and see who the staff are, find out a bit about them
  • Check out the competitions and deadlines to enter
  • Review the classes and make your tentative schedule
#6 Take time to fill out the registration forms and get them back to the producers to make their life a little easier (and save you time on site). Putting on a convention is a HUGE undertaking, help them help you by doing things in a timely manner. #7 Make an email file folder on your computer for ALL emails about the event to go in. Make it a habit to put all the notes there. #8 Make sure you are on the group Facebook page for the event and either turn on the notification or check it often to see new info. #9 Select your classes wisely; take time to really review the information Click on the link below and print this worksheet to help you with your decisions   Show your support to the event you are attending.
  • Post on social media you are attending the event (let your customers know you are continuing your education).
  • Purchase items from those folks at the vendor showcase, or if they sell from a class etc. No, you can’t purchase everything. But realize the reason people are selling items is to help make back the money they invested in the event. I do my best to support distributors that attend conventions and that provide education for the industry (something to think of next time you go to look for who to buy your balloons from)
  • Post thank you messages, and send a note of thanks to the company or people who organize the event you attend.
  • Give your honest feedback on what you liked and what can be improved in the future
  • Putting on a convention is a huge undertaking. Take time to thank the producers, staff, instructors and sponsors.
  • As you post photos in the future of jobs you land, or increased income from classes you take give a shout out to the teachers and event you learned from.
Packing and Prep List for Convention
  • Positive Mental Attitude
  • Smile and a good handshake
  • Check what the size and weight requirements are for your airline
  • Put suit cases out a week in advance so you are not totally rushed at the end.
  • Hotel and plane reservation numbers in my calendar
  • Deleting photos from phone, tablet, and camera or purchasing additional cards to have room for over 1,000 photos!
  • Pack a lot of business cards! You are meeting hundreds of new people it’s great to share cards to network after event
  • Portfolio or marketing materials that you may share during conversation to get ideas from others on improvements you can make
  • Bring a special baggie or ladies even a cosmetic bag to put all the business cards in of the people you meet.
  • Pack your Power Cord for all electronics (WBC 2012 Jani Blocker was nice enough to buy me a universal power cord when I left my laptop cord at home – not cheap!)
  • Pack an extension cord they come in handy in your hotel room since we all have so many electronics! Make sure it is 3 prong, 3 plug end or power strip
  • If you have a back up power pack or battery for your phone – bring it!
  • Chap Stick
  • Hand lotion
  • Jacket or sweater
  • Logo Clothing to show off your brand
  • Backpack or day bag to keep your notebook, notes etc in from class to class
  • Clothing for the Awards Dinner, and anything within theme or fun for other parties and special events.
  • At least 1 Pair of scissors in your checked luggage
  • Hand pump for jams
  • Vitamins or Emergen-C! Typically you get lack of sleep and you are hanging out with about 800 people so keeping healthy is key!
  • Notebook, it’s nice to have extra Pad of paper for notes
  • Pens – easy to lose a pen or run out of ink
  • Highlighter if you like to highlight notes during class
  • Gum/Mints
  • Travel cup or money to buy one to have beverages in class and in your room
  • Travel Kleenex
  • Nail Clippers and file, with all the balloon work you are bound to break a nail!
  • Static spray
  • Swimsuit
  • FILES for the weeks events. If you are running crews while you are away and plan to be in touch with your crew. Email the information to yourself if you wish to review.
  • $$$$ You will want to have some cash and credit cards ready for meals and purchasing items from vendors
  • IF at all possible plan for a full 8 hours of sleep night before your flight. Once you get to convention it is easy to lose track of time and be up in the lobby talking to a new friend til all hours of the night and morning!
TIPS While at Convention
  • Make friends with someone who has a car or split Taxi or Uber cost and run to a store to grab snacks and food for your room to reduce food cost.
  • Volunteer to work on the hands on builds, teacher prep, or competition teams to learn new techniques and make new friends.
  • Be proud to say “Hey, I helped make that and I know with confidence I can recreate for my client”
  • When meeting new people that you do not want to forget take a photo of them with their name tag up by their face, this way when you return home and your memory is mush from meeting hundreds of new people you will easily be able to reference back to who is who!
2014-03-28 21.13.42 2014-03-28 21.13.47   Brenda Eng and Pearlyn Tam from Singapore After meeting at WBC they then came back to the USA for FLOAT 2014, and then WBC 2016, I enjoy spending time with people from around the world that share my passion for the Balloon Industry! Lots of fun memories are about to be created!           Eat meals with different people. It’s great to see old friends, but make some new ones too! IF you are not an outgoing person, and have a hard time meeting new people, relax and say hello! Networking is one of the main reasons I attend conventions. YES I want to learn from the classes. But the friendships I have made over the years from conventions have been my support system to grow my company and lead to many wonderful travels. *** Remember, lots of business cards!**   Ongoing training and support and monthly webinar programs, BalloonBossPro.com Twist & Shout is the premier convention in the US for Balloon Entertainers. How Social Media Post Can Affect Your Balloon Business Brand

Social Media Post balloon Business

How Social Media Post Can Affect Your Balloon Business Brand

As we grow our businesses and our brand, we work hard for our clients to Know, Like and Trust us to be the best service provider. I believe the old saying, “think before you speak” in the world of social media can change to “think before I post” I saw the Non-Hostile Communication Manifesto on a post the other day and I added a graphic to it and shared it below. Read it over and think about how social media post can affect your balloon business brand, and if the things you post when read by a potential client builds good feeling for them to know, like and trust you and your company. One of the trainings I have attended on sales had a phrase that stuck with me. People will remember how you make them feel.
I think in the world of social media and emails, it is easy for many of us to just type away things we may never say if we were standing in front of someone. Or we would not post it if we realized how many people will potentially see those written words and make an instant judgement about us from seeing those words. How many times do we forget to listen to what someone else is sharing, as we want our side to be heard louder? As a business owner I’m not only representing myself when I post online, I’m representing my company. To take it a step further if I ever decide to go to work for someone else, my future employer is probably going to do a social media search on me. A few weeks ago I was with someone who had posted they were looking to hire new staff and showed me how they would pull up each persons social media feed, and within a few minutes be able to decide if they would be a proper fit for their company (great tip to share with your kids!).
  Some things to consider:
The Manifesto was originally written in Italian [F.O. — translated from Annamaria Testa, Il manifesto della comunicazione non ostile. E altri fatti lì attorno (Internazionale, February 20th, 2017

How to Find New Balloon Customers Online

How to Find New Balloon Customers Online

How to Find New Balloon Customers Online

When you look at your sales from the year so far are you happy with where you are at and feel like you have more customers than you can handle? Or do you wish that you had new customers? If you are looking for new customers I encourage you to make the most out of technology to help you find them online. To help you find customers ONLINE – YOUR BUSINESS has to BE ONLINE! How do you choose what is going to work best for you? There are so many social media avenues – Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Snap Chat, Websites and the list goes on and on and on. It’s easy to feel over your head quick!   It is best to start with one thing and do it well then move onto the other. Doing social media well means that you consistently post to the platform that you choose, and interact with your followers.   To help you find balloon customers online, you need to have balloon photos online for them to get hooked and know that YOU are the company they should work with. Through posting people get to Know, Like and Trust You and your company.     Do you have a website? If the answer is no, I encourage you to not just rush out and get one just to have one, put time into the planning and do it well! Since January of 2015 I have been working with Balloon Professionals who have created new websites from scratch to those who are updating their websites, not to mention updating my website several times. Often I hear people say, “my web person just doesn’t GET what I’m wanting from my website”. What I have found is often WE as business owners have not done our homework in advance to get things READY for a designer to do what they need to do, to make the best website for you. Here are some steps prior to developing your website, especially if hiring someone to set it up for you. (these tips also come in handy if you are upgrading or redesigning your website)
  • Business license with a good name for your company that attracts your target audience
  • Purchasing the domain name that fits your business
  • Having good solid photos of your work or a collection of stock images you can use so your clients see what they are purchasing
  • Typing out the content of what you want your website to say
  • Collecting testimonies from your clients
  • Writing the content to put on the site from ‘About Us’ (profile) to names of the decor you post pictures of
  • Creating the detailed questions for your ‘Contact Us’ form to gather as much info from the start as possible when someone reaches out for a quote
  • Determining what galleries you wish to have – are you showing your balloons by type of event, type of decor or both?
  • Do you want your website to have a blog?
  • Have you studied other websites to see what you LIKE and what you do not like?
  • Have you individually labeled each of your photos and put them into albums to make it easy for your designer to put them onto the website?
  • Do you have your photos on Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar to make it easy for the designer to access the photos to load onto your website?
Gather this information together so that when you talk to your designer they have a clear picture of what they are to create. They cannot read our minds! And they also do not know the terminology of our photographs.                 If you would like more information on how to find new customers online I encourage you to join us at BalloonBossPro.com for online training and monthly webinars. Brandon Turpin, of Utah Balloon Creations, in Payson, Utah. Brandon has a background in tech and with his wife is the owner of a growing balloon company. He understands the terminology of both the tech and balloon world to help you navigate the benefits of online marketing. Topics covered will be:
  • How to set up Google AdWords
  • Importance of a professional website
  • Email Marketing
  • Re-targeting Ads.
Here is a past webinar replay to help you with your online presence:                 The Heart of Social Media – Blenda Berrier   Through our use of website, blog and social media I have seen Party People Events grow. They are wonderful tools to show what you sell. People get to know you and your company through your post online. Marketing is not a ONE and DONE kind of thing. It takes consistency and time for your business to grow.   Online presence done correctly in today’s society is one of your KEYS to SUCCESS!     Your Partner in Success,   Joette Giardina, CBA Mentor. Is Your Balloon Business Booming or Are You Having a Rocky Start to 2018?

Is your balloon business booming or are you having a rocky start to 2018?

How is 2018 going for you? I know many that have had a rocky start to 2018 and others whose businesses are booming!
We all have life circumstances that can cause us to take time away from our businesses. Personally, I just spent 10 days away from my home, husband, daughter and business to stay at my dads home and care for him as he lost his battle with cancer. During the quiet times sitting by his bedside I kept reflecting on how my dad was a master at achieving his goals. He dreamed of something, and then he worked REALLY hard to make those goals a reality. Even while Battling cancer, his body losing weight and him becoming weak, he set goals and worked hard to make his goals happen. So what does this have to do with You and Your Balloon Business? Are you willing to put in the hard work? Invest in new tools? Work daily on the little things that can make a big difference over time? Building a successful balloon business that produces your dream income does not happen overnight, it takes investment of money and time and dedication on your part. The key is to start each new day making steps forward towards your goal.
What sets apart the businesses that are booming from those with a rocky start? Activity! Do not just sit behind a computer screen watching what other balloon people are doing on Facebook! Get out and create balloon decor, take photos of your work, use it on social media, and get the balloons into the hands and EYES of your target market. Build Relationships with people in your target market, visit different networking organizations and pick one to be an active member of. Educate your clients about what you can do and how you can help or serve them with your balloon decor. Make sales calls, in person or on the phone reach out to your potential clients. If they don’t know you exist they cannot buy from you! It is February, do your existing clients know that you LOVE THEM…and want to work with them again? Do your potential clients even know you exist and you are available to decorate when they celebrate? If you are ready to make 2018 GREAT and want to increase your confidence, have systems and organization to your marketing and not just PRAY people will find you. Create content that gets people’s attention and directs your customers to take action. Show your clients they are appreciated and then join us for the next part of our Promotions & Profits Online Workshop.

Great Alternative to Helium Balloons for Outdoor Events!

Great Alternative to Helium Balloons for Outdoor Events!

Have you ever had a client call you and ask you to create something outdoors that you did not want to do? I have been working in the balloon industry full time since 2003, and over the years I have learned that my #1 job is to go with my gut, and educate my clients on solutions that I can feel confident setting up for their event that will look the best to give them the results that want – but sometimes NOT be what they originally ask for. Many times I refer to the saying, “we don’t know, what we don’t know”. Professional balloon decor is not something most people have experience with. When they think balloons, they think helium, they are not aware of air filled decor, framing. and for that matter most do not know that Balloon Decor is a growing international career for thousands of people around the world.   I had a client call and say that she wanted to order 30, 3 ft. helium balloons to fly above tents for an outdoor event. I did what I always do and asked for a few more details. Found out they were holding an Ice Cream Festival and wanted to put the balloon on all the ice cream vendors tents. Now it was my time to educate. I said 3 ft balloons are a great way to mark the tents. However, I prefer NOT to use Helium whenever possible outdoors if there is another alternative that might be even better. If it rains, the helium balloon can come down to the ground and pop. RED outdoors attracts a ton of sun and tends to pop more than lighter colors. I’d love to use white or pink. She said NOPE it has to be red! I let her know that I would not promise the life of a 3ft. red outdoor in direct Florida sun and heat. They will look great when I first put them up – but they may pop during the day. She said she was willing to take the risk. I had her sign that on the contract! I suggested we make mini Ice Cream cones under each 3 ft. balloon to have fun with the theme of the event and put it on a pole that I could zip tie to the tent pole legs and fly about the tent so it would not blow down if it happened to rain or be a super windy day. (I use a 10 foot, 1/2 inch EMT) I Inflated the red 3 foot balloons to full size, let the air out and sized to 2 ft., I used 16 inch, 11 inch and 9 inch undersized yellow for the cones. Client loved it! It was a Very windy day so I was glad I was not installing Helium. At the end of the full day event about 1/3 of the red balloons had popped, as I had warned…but they had lasted the majority of the event which was good to know. The pink ice cream cone I set up for the photo opp at the end of the day looked just like it did when I set it up! Things that I learned from this event: I was delighted that I stuck with my gut and encouraged client not to use helium for the event. I was glad my contract stated I’m not responsible for balloons popping when exposed to sun, heat, weather etc. We are the balloon professionals, most of our clients have NO IDEA what is possible with balloons. I encourage you to keep educating yourself no matter how long you have been in the industry. The Balloon Industry has a great amount of training available in person and online. Get as much of it as you can! As a balloon professional it is important to do research to see how balloons hold up in your environment. I do several test throughout the year of how balloons react to the sun and heat outdoors in Florida where I live. I encourage you to do the same types of test so you can confidently speak to your clients about what to expect. Some of those results and videos are in my facebook group, come join the conversation if you are working on your career in balloons. Meet Sue Bowler, Creator of The Very Best Balloon Blog

One of my goals with BalloonCoach.com is to create an Online Community for Balloon Professionals around the world to be able to easily locate training, resources and support to take YOUR Business to New Heights! No matter if you are new to the industry or have been earning money from balloons for over 25 years, one key to continued success is to stay current in the industry. The Very Best Balloon Blog is a resource I enjoy turning to often, with over 200 blog posts, and a search feature that makes it easy to find the topic you are looking for. I had the pleasure of interviewing Sue Bowler, CBA, a social media columnist for Qualatex to find out a little more about the person behind one of my favorite blogs.

What did you do before entering the “world” of balloons? I am one of those people who does not change their jobs often. Primarily, you could say that I have always been an instructor! I got my first training instructor job at the age of 19 for a large retail store and pretty much worked for the same company until I left to have my first daughter. How were you introduced to the balloon world? After my first daughter was born, I was looking to find something that I could do that would fit in with being a mother and working from home. I saw an advert for ‘talking balloons’, these were plastic strips that you attached to balloons that made them talk… and that was it, I was hooked, although the plastic strips were pretty useless! How long have you been working as a freelance instructor for Qualatex? On and off for about 18 years! I have always worked closely with Qualatex. I worked for Conwin for 7 years from 2002-2009 and continued to teach at events, but since leaving Conwin, I resumed working for Qualatex as a freelance instructor. What do you feel is the most important aspect to having a successful business? To run a business as a business. That’s where I pretty much failed when I first started. I did not know how to run a business, how to charge for my work, or how to write a contract. The creative side comes naturally to most of us, but the business side is harder, but so so important! What is the craziest situation you have ever encountered while on a balloon installation? Not sure if this is crazy or stupid. I was working on a wedding many years ago when the bride and wedding party arrived early at the venue. Instead of keeping my cool and just clearing up quickly and leaving, I hid in a cupboard. It then dawned on me that it would be ages yet, and I slipped away without them ever knowing that we were still there! What resources does SueBowler.com offer for Balloon professionals? My website is work in progress, I sell educational videos including my own, plus I show people what I am capable of making with balloons, which occasionally does attract an enquiry and has lead to some great corporate jobs! I am very excited as I have a new DVD, Balloon Decor 2, that will be on sale from September 1st. There is a lot of additional information that I did not manage to get on the DVD as I over-ran (it’s over 4 hours long)! So, there will be a big resources area on my website for those who have bought the DVD. Do you ship your DVD’s outside of the UK? I ship my video’s worldwide, but I also have some distributors around the world, so I am happy to refer people to a local distributor if possible. Most memorable or special moment for you in the world of balloons. At the 2010 WBC, I was awarded The Golden Light Award in honour of the late Linda Bruce. Linda and I were very close friends, we enjoyed spending time together whenever possible, bearing in mind we lived 1000’s of miles apart! When we lost Linda to cancer, I felt that I had lost a big part of my life. Being awarded this honour was so very special! What professional organizations are you a part of in the UK? I am a member of an organisation called BAPIA – Balloon and Party Industry Alliance. It was actually founded and is owned and run by my husband John Bowler. John has also worked in the balloon industry for almost 25 years and is extremely passionate about the industry. John started BAPIA as it was felt that there was a need for an independent organisation that could support the balloon and party industry. BAPIA’s membership is a healthy mix of manufacturers, distributors, retailers and decorators. It also has members from others industries such as face painters, candy cart suppliers and other party based businesses. BAPIA works hard to support the party industry and the professionals within it by promoting a best practices policy to create positive and sustainable growth. BAPIA promotes its members and the industry to the public and encourages the use of professionals for all balloon and party needs. BAPIA aims to act as a unified voice for balloon and party professionals and will represent its members on industry related matters and bring benefits and information to assist in the growth and security of their business. With a group of members, BAPIA supports one of the biggest children’s charities every year by decorating their Christmas party. This is a very high profile event and gets huge media coverage. The decor helps to transform a hotel ballroom into a magical Christmas wonderland each year! Blog from 2014 Children’s event   What are some of your favorite countries traveled to teaching about balloons? I love the culture in Japan, and traveling to remote places. In Israel, I loved the history of the country, the people and food are lovely. What is the TOPIC or blog post that seems to have the MOST interest – or that you refer people to most often. This is a very interesting question, as so many of the blogs that I have written over the years get read and re-read all the time! The top topic appears to be ‘how to make balloon walls’, which is closely followed by “How much should I charge for that”? I think there is a good split between design lead blogs verses business related blogs. What words of wisdom do you have for those who are struggling in building and growing their business to the level of revenue they dream about, but have not yet obtained? Invest in your future! There is no better way to grow your business than to grow your knowledge and confidence. I think that many people start a balloon business because they feel they don’t have to invest a great deal to get started. But to succeed, you need to treat your business as a business and not a hobby. Invest in good education, good equipment and good marketing. Anything else you would like for people to know about you? Apart that I am very passionate about the balloon industry! I recently became a grandma… or nanny as I am known as. My granddaughter, in only a few short months, has become such a very special part of my life. I also have an adorable dog called Mylo, who keeps me very fit and happy too. I love to travel when I am teaching and meeting such wonderfully talented balloon artists, but going home to my husband and family is so very special.   If you are working on your CBA exam – Sue has several blogs to help you with that When you go to her blog Search CBA Also go to Beginners guide to the Elements and principles of Design.
